University of Guyana to be reissued radio license

On Wednesday, the Minister of Public Telecommunications, Cathy Hughes, is expected to announce that the University of Guyana will be reissued with a radio broadcast license.

The University’s Communications Unit is likely to spearhead the production of programmes and training for the University’s radio network.

The University of Guyana’s programme of Journalism and Communication has been in existence for more than 30 years and is one of only a few institutions in the region that is dedicated to training Broadcast and Print Journalists and Producers of radio and television programmes.

The University of Guyana’s Communications Studies Division had always been granted Radio Broadcasting Licenses up until 1990 when their request for a renewal was officially denied.

The Guyana Broadcasting Authority has been looking at the issue along with the Ministry of Public Telecommunications and the license will be reissued, according to multiple sources.

The University will host a special event on Wednesday to announce the return of University radio.
