A preliminary review of the infamous 1993 Monica Reece murder investigation has found that “an unprofessional course of action was taken in the investigation”, at the time. That’s according to Acting Police Commissioner, David Ramnarine.

Ramnarine told members of the media on Friday that it is clear to him that at the time of the initial investigation, an unprofessional course of action was pursued.

The case was recently reopened by Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum following requests from family members. A review of the initial investigations has been ongoing.

While that review is not yet complete, the Acting Commissioner said it is safe to say at this point that strict investigating procedures were not followed.

“And that is putting it mildly when I say that an unprofessional course of action was taken in the year and period,” he added.

On April 9, 1993, Reece, a 19-year-old security guard became known to all Guyanese after her body was dumped from a speeding pickup vehicle on Main Street, Georgetown.

It was Good Friday night.

Twenty three years later, no one has ever been charged for her murder, although a number of well known persons were fingered in the case at the time. 

Although the key witness in the case cannot be located by police, many persons believe the police might be onto something and the murder will finally be solved.

Several other cold cases included the murder of Designer Trevor Rose and Bank Employee, Sheema Mangar.

Ramnarine said those investigations are also progressing.
