Unvaccinated persons represent most hospitalised COVID cases

More than 85% of Guyana's adult population has received the first dose of one of the COVID-19 vaccines while 65% of the same adult population is fully vaccinated. The Ministry of Health continues to encourage persons who are still to return for their second dose, to do so soon and beef up their protection against the virus.

With most COVID-19 restrictions lifted in Guyana and the country fully re-opened, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony is reminding persons who remain unvaccinated against the virus that they continue to be at a higher risk of contracting the virus and ending up with severe symptoms.

“We currently have 19 persons in hospital and of the 19 persons, 13 are at the Ocean View Hospital with five of them in the ICU. We continue to provide care at our various institutions. What we have noticed is that the persons coming into the hospital, most of them are unvaccinated, so it will be very helpful if persons can still go out and get their vaccination because it will prevent them from getting the severe form of COVID-19”, Dr. Anthony.

The Health Minister also warned fully vaccinated persons that their protection against the virus may also be waning and therefore they should make themselves available for a booster dose for added protection.

“We really need to get those doses up because by now a lot of people would have exceeded the five-month interval between their last dose and this booster dose”, he said.

Earlier this week, the Government lifted the majority of restrictions that were put in place as safeguards against the spread of the virus.

The ban on public events and promotions has been lifted and mask-wearing is no longer mandatory although Health Officials encourage persons to keep their masks on when they are out in public.
