US Ambassador expresses shock over “lawless and riotous” storming of US Capitol

US Ambassador to Guyana, Sarah Ann Lynch has expressed her deep shock and sadness at the storming of the United States Capitol building in Washington yesterday by supporters of the outgoing US President.

The storming left four persons dead and the US President Donald Trump is being blamed for inciting the protesters.

In a statement this afternoon, Ambassador Lynch said “lawlessness and rioting are always unacceptable, and do not represent the values of the United States as enshrined in the U.S. Constitution”.

She noted that there is a role for peaceful protests to hold leaders to account, “but that is not what we saw yesterday”

According to the US Diplomat, “despite the chaos, our democratic institutions remain robust. Those responsible will be held accountable and the democratic process will continue”.

She said the US will have an orderly transition to a new administration on January 20th.

“The United States has been tested before and will be tested again, but our strong institutions will always prevail”, she said.

The Organisation of American States, CARICOM and several other international organisations and foreign countries have criticised the attack on American democracy by a sitting US President and his supporters.
