US wants Guyana Elections to be Free, Fair and Credible

The United States Embassy in Georgetown has not been invited to play any direct role in the May 11 general elections but says it will be keeping an eye on the conduct of the elections to ensure it is free, fair and credible.

On Wednesday, the Embassy restated its commitment to supporting the execution of elections in Guyana in an environment that offers a level playing field for all contesting parties.

U.S Embassy Charge d’ Affaires, Bryan Hunt told News Source that the embassy will play no direct role in the elections but will be supporting the Organization of American States in its observer mission.

The Guyana Government has already invited several international organizations to observe the May 11 elections with plans to also accredit several local organisations.

Hunt explained that the Embassy will be putting money into the operation of the OAS and also anticipates that it will be able to support domestic groups that are going to take part in observer missions.

“Free, fair and creditable election is where we will be placing the emphasis of our diplomatic work,” Hunt said.

He refused to comment on the recently formed pre elections cotillion between the opposition parties – the Alliance for Change (AFC) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

“As a diplomat, it is not for me to take a position about your domestic political situation. What I am concerned with is the conduct of free fair and credible elections.”

Representatives of the Embassy have been meeting with all political parties on an ongoing basis. To this end, Hunt has indicated that discussions were held with each Party on their particular concerns about the upcoming elections.

Hunt assured too that these meeting will continue as things move forward.
