The Venezuelan Government of President Nicholas Maduro has extended congratulations to new Guyana President Irfaan Ali and is requesting that Guyana and Venezuela return to talks that pre-dated the last Guyana Government.

Guyana currently has Venezuela before the International Court for re-enforcement of the 1899 Arbitral Award which settled the border controversy between the two neighbouring states.

The action was initiated by former President David Granger after the United Nations Secretary-General found that the Good Offices Process had run its course.

But in a statement issued by the Venezuelan Government, it said the Maduro administration “vows to resume the ties of cooperation and good neighborliness that characterized the comprehensive bilateral relationship with Guyana until 2015, always seeking the shared development of both peoples.”

The Venezuelan Government says it recognises the will of the people of Guyana with the election results.

A few weeks ago, oral arguments were made in the case before the International Court of Justice on the issue of the Court’s jurisdiction to hear the matter.

Venezuela is not taking part in the proceedings.
