Venezuela wants UN Chief to send border controversy back to UN Good Officer instead of Judicial settlement

Days after an engagement with Guyana’s President David Granger, outgoing UN Secretary General
Ban – Ki -Moon met with Venezuela’s President Nicholas Maduro where the Guyana/Venezuela border controversy was discussed.

The UN Chief met with Maduro on Monday in Colombia following a meeting with President Granger at the UN headquarters on Saturday.

The UN Secretary General has promised Guyana to offer an assessment of the  border row in November, before he leaves office.

On Wednesday, the UN Secretary General told Journalists in New York that while President Granger wants to refer the matter to the International Court of Justice, Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro seems not to be ready for that move.

The Secretary General said based on the meeting with Maduro, Venezuela wants to continue with the UN Good Officer Process.

Guyana has already indicated that it believes that process has failed over the years and now wishes for the decades old border controversy to be finally settled by the International Court of Justice.

The UN Secretary General said he believes that disputes should be resolved through peaceful dialogue. He said he will continue to urge that countries respect international law. His assessment is still to be offered in November.
