The former Accountant of the Guyana Rice Development Board, Peter Ramcharran has been arrested in Canada.

He is wanted locally in connection with a massive multi million dollar fraud at the Guyana Rice development Board.  Ramcharran is expected to face an immigration hearing that could prepare the way for his return to Guyana.

He has been on the run since investigations were launched into the operations of the GRDB as part of a state audit.

Six former board members, including two Members of Parliament for the Opposition and managers, were recently charged in connection with an over $250 million dollar fraud that is believed to have taken place at the rice agency under the previous administration.

News Source understands that once it was learnt that the former accountant was in Canada, a request was made for his arrest following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the local courts.

Agents of the Special Organized Crime Unit have since been in contact with the Canadian authorities over the man’s arrest and the hearings that he will have to face in Canada before any possible extradition.

Just recently, the US government revoked the visas of all of the other persons charged in connection with the same fraud, including the two Opposition Members of Parliament.

They have all declared their innocence.
