The Home Affairs Ministry in a statement on Thursday evening challenged the Guyana Police Force to rid the force of those police officers who may be destroying the force’s image through their actions.

In the statement, the Ministry said “it is most alarming to note that in the wake of an ongoing allegation of sexual assault, yet to be determined, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) while it struggles to regain public confidence, the Organization finds itself further embattled due to this alleged despicable act.”

The statement referred to the latest sodomy allegations brought against members of the police force by a 16-year-old young man, who claimed that he was sodomised by three police officers at the Police Outpost at Stabroek Market. The three policemen have been placed under close arrest pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs is awaiting the outcome of the investigation into the allegation of sexual assault of a young boy by Police Ranks in downtown Georgetown. If proven guilty, such elements must be weeded out from the Ranks of the Guyana Police Force. They would not be worthy of wearing Police Uniforms”, the statement added.

In wake of the recent allegations of sodomy and abuse leveled against policemen, the Ministry of Home Affairs said  the Guyana Police Force should pay closer attention to its recruitment procedures and screening practices when recruiting civilians into its ranks “so as to ensure that perverts are not allowed entry into the Organization.”

In early January, a 24-year-old young man claimed that he was brutally sodomised with a baton by police officers while in custody in the Timehri area. His claims have been investigated and the file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.

The statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs came hours after the 16-year-old boy who claims that he was sodomised by three policemen, staged a midday protest on the roof of the Police Consumers Complex on Robb Street. The young man threatened to take his own life as he cried out for justice. He was eventually handcuffed and removed from the roof of the building by the Police.
