The Guyana Revenue Authority is reporting that the total weight of the cocaine found hidden in a container on a cargo ship at Linden, topped 420 pounds.
The bust was made late Monday night into early Tuesday morning as the ship which arrived from Suriname, docked in the mining town of Linden to be loaded with bauxite destined for Europe.
One hundred and eighty five (185) packages (bricks) of the cocaine, were found hidden under wooden pallets in the container.
According to a GRA release, it’s officials acted on intelligence provided by the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), that one of the containers onboard the vessel had cocaine. “The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit was called in, and together with officers of Guyana Revenue Authority’s (GRA’s) Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID) and Drug Examination Unit (DEU) conducted an examination of the container”, the statement said.
Agents from the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, the Police Narcotics Branch and the GRA swarmed the town of Linden late on Monday night and boarded the vessel, MV Deltadiep. The vessel’s seven member crew was taken into custody.
The container was moved to Georgetown from Linden by the drug enforcement agents. It was opened early Tuesday morning and the illegal substance was discovered.
The GRA said the “discovery of narcotics onboard the ocean going vessel has once again proven the success of the GRA’s joint efforts in tackling the illicit drug trade.”
