Williams and Nandlall still to meet on GECOM Chairmanship issues

More than a week after the President requested that the Opposition sends a representative to meet with the Attorney General on the issue of choosing the next GECOM chairman and the interpretation of the qualifications, the meeting is still to take place.

The Opposition Leader had indicated that Member of Parliament and former Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, would be his representative to the meeting. However, Mr. Nanlall has since requested that the meeting takes place on any day after the 25th January.

Today Attorney General, Basil Williams indicated that he has always been prepared for the meeting, but it appears as though the Opposition is in no rush.

He said the meeting will now have to take place after he returns from the meeting of the Caricom Council of Legal Education, which takes place this weekend.

The President has been sticking firm to his position that the Opposition Leader needs to submit a list of persons who have either served as judges, qualified to be judges or are fit and proper with the attributes of what would be expected of a Judge.  He said the Constitution speaks clearly to that.

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo while admitting that his first list may not have had any judges or persons qualified to serve as a Judge, it did have persons who he believe are fit and proper to serve as the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission.

The Opposition Leader was hoping for a face to face meeting with the President on the issue.  The President believe the legal representatives of the two should deal with interpretations.
