Woman files lawsuit against Georgetown hospital over still birth; Another sues Suddie Hospital for injuries to newborn

Two women, one who experienced a still birth at the Georgetown Public Hospital in November 2015, have filed lawsuits in excess of $10 million each against the state.

Two women, one who experienced a still birth at the Georgetown Public Hospital in November 2015, have filed lawsuits in excess of $10 million each against the state.

Both women are being represented by former Attorney General Anil Nandlall.

In the first case, Sumarie Balwant is claiming damages in excess of $10 million and claims negligence of employees at the Maternity Ward at Public Hospital Georgetown.

In a writ, Balwant claims that the health care workers negligence caused or contributed to her delivering a baby which was dead.

The still birth occurred between the 16th and 18th of November, 2015. Balwant is also seeking damages in excess $10 million for personal injuries, pain and suffering “occasioned by the negligence of the servants and/or agents of the Defendant.”

Meanwhile, Parbattie Ramdat in her capacity as the mother Arveer Ashok Amarnauth is suing the state for damages in excess of $10 million, again for negligence.

Ramdat delivered on 26th October, 2015, at the Suddie Hospital, Essequibo Coast. The woman claims that her child suffered multiple, physical and other injuries before, during and after delivery.

In this case, both of the baby’s hands hand to be cast when it was found that they were broken on delivery. She is also suing for personal injuries, pain and suffering. The GPHC and the Suddie Hospital authorities have 10 days to reply to the writs which were filed.
