Woman rescued by neighbour after attack by bandits at Plantation Providence

A taxi driver and a woman from Plantation Providence on the East Bank of Demerara, are both nursing wounds after being attacked by bandits early this morning.

The incident reportedly took place just after 2 o’ clock this morning as the woman was arriving home.

The injured woman has been identified as Kathy Vyphuis. She sustained injuries to one of her arms.

According to her neighbour, Nicole Telford, she was awakened by two loud gunshots and screaming.

Telford said she managed to pull the injured woman to safety into her house but moments later the bandits came knocking at her door, demanding that they open the door. She said they remained in hiding and summoned the police.

She recalled that the bandits came back and said it was not the woman that they wanted, but it was the driver.

“We started screaming with no one to assist. We called the police again the said they said they were on their way”.

The two women complained that it took more than an hour for the Police to respond from the nearby Mocha and Providence stations. By that time, the taxi driver had managed to make his way to the police.

The neighbour who rescued the injured woman said this morning’s robbery is the third to take place in the community in recent days. She complained about regular poor responses by the Police and no patrols being done in the area located just before mocha arcadia.

An investigation is underway this morning.
