Worker falls to death at construction site for new mall on Regent St.

The construction site for a new mall on Regent Street was shut down today after a worker fell to his death from the six-story building.

The dead man has been identified as 25-year-old Lloyd Farose of Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara.

The incident occurred just after 1 o’clock this afternoon. The construction worker fell from the fifth floor of the building which has been under construction for several months. It is owned by newspaper publisher Glen Lall.

Mr. Lall told News Source that there were just five workers on-site at the building at the time of the incident. He said there was no construction work taking place on the fifth floor at the time, so he was surprised when he received the news of the contracted worker falling to his death.

The businessman explained that the workers were all at lunch at the time of the incident and the young construction worker might have ventured to the 5th floor to relax during his lunch break.

The Ministry of Labour has launched an investigation into the incident and has put a pause on continuous work at the site.

Guyana is currently observing Occupational Health and Safety month. Earlier this month, the Minister of Labour said he is very concerned about the number of workplace accidents that have been occurring at construction sites in the city.
