A 21-year-old man was remanded to jail this morning after being charged with the rape of a Venezuelan woman.

The accused, Jamal Bunbury, was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge as he appeared before the Chief Magistrate.

It is alleged that on the 3rd of August, Bunbury raped the 26-year-old Venezuelan woman in the Region One community of Hosororo.

The woman who lives in the same area was reportedly asleep when said she felt the man holding her down and sexually penetrating her against her will.

The alleged victim filed a police complaint after the incident and the accused was arrested.

The matter has been transferred to the Mabaruma Court, where it will come up again on the 20th August.

The accused will remain behind bars until then.
