BREAKING: Eight uniformed guards from Presidential Guard Service recently tested positive for COVID-19

Eight uniformed guards from the Presidential Guard Unit were recently tested positive for the Coronavirus and have been in quarantine, according to the Guyana Police Force.

These are not new cases and are included in the total number of cases in Guyana.

In a brief statement, the Police Force explained that random tests were done on ranks and the eight positive results were returned. The first two tests date back to early April while the recent tests were conducted just over two weeks ago.

The Presidential Guard Unit provides security for the President and Prime Minister and their official residences as well security for the former Presidents.

A senior Police source explained this evening that the guards who were tested positive are not those who are part of the Body Protection Unit which provides direct bodyguard services for the Head of State.

It was explained that the uniformed guards are the ones that usually provide security for the Office of the President and the official residences.

It was further explained that none of the ranks who tested positive work directly with the President and therefore he would not have been at risk.

Since the curfew measures have been put in place, President David Granger has been mostly working from his private residence on the East Bank of Demerara.
