The Carter Center has announced that former Prime Minister of Senegal, Aminata Touré, will be the co-Chair of the Carter Center’s Election Observer Mission in Guyana.

Chairperson of the Carter Center, Jason J. Carter, will serve as the other Co-Chair.

In a statement this morning, the Carter Center Chairperson said the Carter Center cares deeply about democratic governance in Guyana and the upcoming election is an important opportunity for all Guyanese to rise above political divisions, respect democratic principles, and move together toward a brighter future.

Meanwhile, the former Senegal Prime Minister, said that she is honored to co-lead the mission: “We hope the election will help move Guyana forward in the spirit of inclusive governance.”

The Carter Center has had a core team and group of long-term observers in Guyana since early January.

The co-Chairs will arrive in Guyana in the days leading up to the elections. Once here, they will meet with key stakeholders including the candidates contesting the polls and other observer missions.

The Carter Center is observing Guyana’s general election at the invitation of the government of Guyana.
