PPP accuses President of doing “nothing to comply with Constitutional Provisions of No-Confidence Motion

The Opposition People’s Progressive Party responded to President Granger’s address to the nation by accusing him of attempting to convey the impression that the Elections Commission as an independent body can afford to ignore its obligation to comply with the constitution.

In the address to the nation, the President stated that he will set the elections date when the Elections Commission indicates its readiness.

In a statement, the PPP said while the President claims that he wants elections within the shortest possible time, the party is convinced that he has done nothing to comply with the constitutional provisions that became activated with the passage of the no-confidence motion.

The PPP said “the Caribbean Court of Justice had ordered that: the provisions of Article 106(6) and (7) of the Constitution apply to a No Confidence motion; and that upon the passage of this motion of no confidence in the Government, the clear provisions of Article 106 immediately became engaged”.

The Opposition believes that the government has been deliberately delaying the elections.

The Guyana Elections Commission has told both the Government and Opposition that it is working to possibly host elections before the end of this year.

The Commission has not settled on a timeline for the elections. Another statutory meeting of the Commission is scheduled for today.
