The Ministry of Health has established special clinics at public hospitals across the country to assist and treat persons who have recovered from COVID-19 but are still facing long-term effects of the virus.

According to Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, researchers have discovered that the COVID-19 virus enters cells across the body and affects different body organs.

He noted that while persons would recover from the virus, that recovery does not mean all is well for everyone.

“Now different persons would have different manifestations of the disease depending on which organ for that person was most affected. Some people, if the virus would have predominantly affected their brain, they continue even after being discharged from the hospital to have hallucinations. Sometimes they have brain fog, meaning that, in the midst of a conversation they kind of zone out and not understand what is going on around them,” the Health Minister said.

The Minister said there are also patients, especially younger persons who present signs of heart problems and would usually get symptoms similar to that of a heart attack after they recovered from COVID.

“We have seen persons, who prior to COVID were not diabetics and after COVID they would have presented symptoms of diabetes. And again we are seeing people not just with diabetes but we are seeing people who have other kinds of diseases relating to the endocrine system,” the Health Minister noted.

 Persons are also showing up with various blood diseases the Minister further explained.

“So as I said almost every organ of the body POST COVID can be affected and we just have to monitor and get a thorough history from the patient to know at what point they had COVID and what they are presenting with now and how to treat them. So we have set up clinics now at the various hospitals and these patients would normally come back there for their treatment,” the Minister pointed out.

While the rate of infection in Guyana appears on the decline, the Health Ministry is still warning citizens about not following the safety guideline.
