Vote recount could save Guyana from sanctions -Jagdeo

The General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Bharrat Jagdeo shot down claims by the APNU+AFC that he is anti-national for supporting the threats of sanctions against Guyana.

The US and the UK have both threatened consequences if there is the swearing-in of any government based on election results that are not credible.

At an afternoon press conference, Mr. Jagdeo said his party is fighting against the sanctions and Guyana could avoid the sanctions by having the votes recounted.

“We are still trying to avoid the sanctions by asking them to do the right thing, which is to have a recount done that would allow for the rightful President to be sworn in and then we can avoid the sanctions, personal and national sanctions that will affect all of our people”.

At an earlier press conference today, APNU+AFC Executive Joe Harmon accused Jagdeo and the PPP of being anti-national after reports surfaced that the PPP was fully behind calls for sanctions. Jagdeo said he is not the anti-national one.

“We are not anti-national and that’s the first thing. The people who are anti-national is this APNU+AFC cabal that would put the country at risk and the people at risk for sanctions because of their lust for power”, Jagdeo responded.

He also accused the APNU+AFC of hiring a firm to address some of the issues being raised by other countries. Jagdeo said that will not work as he praised the work of the US lobbying firm that was hired last year by his party for over $30 million.

On the issue of matters in the Court over the elections, the PPP General Secretary said he would not be supportive of his party filing any election petition since that would take years in the Court.

According to Jagdeo “they would like to move it away from fraud into a normal kind of environment where if you have a dispute over the election you file an election petition, like what happened in 2015. So, they are remembering fondly that in 2015, we filed an election petition and what happens five years later the election petition was not heard, they blocked it in the court so they could not survive out the five years by doing what they did between 2015 and 2019”.

The PPP General Secretary maintains that his party won the elections.
