The Guyana Football Federation (GFF), in collaboration with the National Association For Women’s Football (NAWF), has launched its Women’s Development League.
At the launching, Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Valarie Garrido- Lowe said when it comes to football, “the talent is here and the time is right, let’s use this league to play great female football.”
The Minister added, “having a developmental league is excellent for the growth and expansion of football locally and is keeping on par with the international standard.”
Garrido-Lowe’s contention is that Guyana has an abundance of talent that needs to be nurtured by professionals.
She said, “Guyana has raw talents, as for someone who has travelled the length and breadth of this country I can tell you, the girls just need someone to coach their skills”.
The Minister further stated that she is confident, that in the coming years, a large percentage of locally based players will be representing the National team.
NAWF President, Charmine Wade, explained that“as of 2013 and onwards, FIFA has decided to increase its annual subventions to female football; six years ago we were standing at 5% subvention but today we stand at 20% subvention.”
According to second Vice President of the GFF, Rawlston Adams, FIFA has donated balls, uniforms and shoes for the tournament and revealed that the GFF will soon be launching its school football programme targeting young boys and girls, to harness their talent.
The league which commences on September 17, will run for two months with participation of thirteen (13) clubs drawn from three-geographic districts.
The teams in district one are: Fruta Conquerors, Guyana Defence Force, Foxy ladies and Bartica; District two comprises of New Amsterdam Warriors, West Side Conquerors, KuruKuru Warriors, Demerara Queens and Kwakwani Strikers while district three will feature Saints Football Club, Snatchers Football Club, Paiwomak Football Club and Shulinab Football Club.
