It what sports commentators have described as an irresistible offer, the Government of Guyana on Wednesday confirmed that the country will be hosting the Finals, Semi-Finals and four other matches in the Caribbean Premier League cricket competition.

The glitzy tournament, which brings together some of the best cricketers from across the globe on franchise teams, is expected to sign on to a US$1.5Million deal with the Guyana government.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister of Natural Resources Raphael Trotman at a press briefing on Wednesday made the announcement after being probed by News Source. He said CPL was initially asking for over US$2 Million to bring the major games to Guyana, but the last he heard, it had been lowered to US$1.5 Million.

CPL’s first offer to Caribbean countries was upward of US$4 Million according to knowledgeable sources.

Minister Trotman believes Guyana hosting the semi-finals and finals could serve as a major boost to the economy and tourism as thousands would flock to the hosting countries to enjoy the cricket games.

“We believe having cricket here, the stars in Guyana, the festive mood, will be a good injection to our economy”, he said.

Trotman also indicated that it will serve to do the country well in its jubilee year of Independence.

Meanwhile, he also announced that the Government of Guyana has reached an agreement with CPL for the paying off of money that was owed to the group by the previous administration. He said an agreement has been reached on a lower amount which will be paid out over a specified period.
