Guyanese sisters take sibling rivalry to Jamaica Squash Championships

They might be considered the Williams sisters of squash, but its a totally different game when they set sibling rivalry aside on the squash court.

National squash player Akeila Wiltshire copped her maiden senior title at the BCIC All Jamaica Senior Squash Championships in Jamaica last month.

Akeila Wiltshire secured her first major win at the Liguanea Club in Kingston by defeating her younger sister Larissa in three intense matches in the finals. The rounds ended 11/3, 11/6 and 11/8.

The older Wiltshire has won six junior titles in Guyana, and finished second three times at the senior level.

She advanced to the finals after defeating Mia Todd 11/3, 11/3 and 11/6 in the quarter finals and Mia Lake 13/11, 11/4 and 11/4 in the semis.

The younger sister, Larissa marched into the finals after a walk-over in the quarter finals, and a victory against Mia Mahfood in the semi-finals.

The senior champion shared with News Source that she had a plan heading into the finals regardless of who she was playing.

“I didn’t think about playing my sister, I was playing an opponent. My strategy was to place my shots in target areas, move her around the court and force her to make the errors, which I thought I executed well” she stated.

Despite finishing second, the younger Wiltshire said that she was satisfied with her performance.“I am satisfied with my performance even though I think I could have played better in the first game of the finals. I had to maintain my focus and continue to play my best which allowed me to improve with each game. I am happy to have brought second place” she said.

The two sisters have a shared vision which involves identifying and working on their weaknesses to produce similar results in future competitions at home and abroad.

Both of them are medical students pursuing studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona in Kingston.  (by Ravin Singh)
