Road Race:  Guyana gears up for South American 10K

The 14th annual South American 10K Road Race Classic will run off on November 20 and a Championship trophy and US$1000 will be awarded to the top senior finishers in the men and women’s categories.

That was the disclosure made recently by the Athletic Association of Guyana (AGG)  at the official launch at the  Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), High Street.

The third leg of the race will run in Peru after some of South Americas and the Caribbean top athletes descend on Guyana.

According to President of the AAG, Aubrey Hutson, there will definitely be an influx of the usual suspects who dominate road races in the continent, including previous winners and the top runners from the only English speaking nation in South America.

It was revealed by the AAG President that there will be a one hour 15 minute deadline on the race by which the roadways will be opened back to vehicular traffic.

It was further revealed that a number of sponsors are on board, including Rainforest waters and Fitness Express. Speaking on behalf of the fitness company, CEO, Jamie McDonald explained that it is a pleasure to be in collaboration with the event and is always looking forward to participate.
 
The first, second, third and fourth runners up will pocket US$600, US$400, US$300 and US$200 along with trophies respectively.

Junior athletes (16-20 years) as well as Masters (Women 35+), Men (40-55) and (56 and above) will also take home trophies and cash prizes.

The top four juniors will receive US$200, US$150, US$100 and US$50 each while the top four Masters (Women 35+), Men (40-55) will run off with US$150, US$100 and US$50 respectively.

Masters (56 and above) top three finishers will collect GY$25,000, GY$15,000 and GY$5, 000 in that order while entrance fees of GY$1000 for Open and GY$500 for Junior and Masters.

In addition to the open category running 10K, there will also be a 3K for the ages 12-14 years while there will be a 1K for kids 10-12years old.

THE Peruvian duo of Yerson Orellana and Luis Ostas placed first and second respectively in the men’s open category of the second leg of the 13th Annual South American 10km Classic Road Race which was staged recently, while Trinidadian Tonya Nero finished ahead of Guyana’s premier female road runner Euleen Josiah Tanner.

The event will commence at 16:00hrs on Carifesta Avenue (in front of GT&T), proceed to the University of Guyana and return to the National Park for the conclusion in front of the Rights of a Child monument.
