Guyana’s “Green Machine” national Rugby team, continued its dominance of the Rugby Americas North (RAN) South Zone Championship as they schooled Trinidad and Tobago 24-17 to defend their title on Saturday afternoon.
Playing in soggy conditions at the St. Stanislaus College Ground on Carifesta Avenue, the visitors proved to be no match for the prowess of the local ruggers led by the powerful Avery Corbin.
Trinidad’s James Phillip scored the first try in the 9th, but the experienced Richard Staglon equalized in the 16th minute. The dynamic Corbin then added another try in the 19th minute which Ryan Gonsalves managed to convert to take the score to 12-5 at half time.
The feisty Ahmed Isaacs then increased the lead with an excellent run in the 59th minute. Keon Alexander looked to resuscitate his team’s chances with a try in the 73rd minute.
However the play which brought the sizable crowd in attendance alive was the breath-taking run from half field by Corbin to sink a try in the 78th minute after which Gonsalves nailed the conversion.
Samuel Roberts landed a try in the 84th but by then the game was done and dusted in favour of Guyana.
The Green Machine will now have a rematch with Mexico on July 1 for the overall RAN championship crown.
