Opposition Leader and Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform, Aubrey Norton, believes it is time that actions be taken against the Guyana Government for the current cost of living problem that continues to plague the country, and those Government policies that are failing the wider population while enriching a few.
At an APNU+AFC Cost of Living rally at the Burnham Basketball Court on Saturday, Mr. Norton urged the Opposition supporters who gathered, to keep focus and do not be distracted by Government propaganda.
He said too many persons have reached a state in Guyana where affording basic food items is unrealistic. Mr. Norton said the country has the finances now to lift people out of poverty, but the Government continues to ignore the cries of the majority.
“When they deprive poor people of income, they are putting the mechanisms in place to control people. When you see they give the billions to the elites, they are putting monies in their pockets with the hope of staying in power, but I say that is wishful thinking. We will see the back of the People’s Progressive Party, the people of this country are fed up,” Norton told his supporters.

The Opposition Leader said the Government seems to have contempt for poor people. Turning his attention to the recently presented National Budget, Mr. Norton said the Budget could be a perfect opportunity to address the inequalities that exist, but he said he is convinced the Government will move in the opposite direction.
“Let me say this to you, the APNU+AFC in government will transfer significant funds to the people of this country. We know that the economy can afford it,” Norton said.
With General Elections due in 2025, Mr. Norton also put his party comrades on notice about preparing for the elections.
“We are saying to you, our people need to be on the ground talking to people and letting them know that life worst under the PPP and that we will deliver quality life to them,” the Opposition leader said.
He said he believes the PPP knows it could be booted from power, and noted that the Opposition will not allow them to stay in office.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Alliance for Change, Khemraj Ramjattan, in his address at the rally stated that the country has found itself in a place where the Government continues to ignore the plight of citizens.
“We have the monies there now, and a lot of people have been writing about it, but the minute anybody writes about it, they have their propaganda tsar, rambling while people are starving. The 10th richest country in the world per capita is Guyana, and with all that money that we got, we are supposed to be fat richer than we are right now,” Mr. Ramjattan stated.
According to the AFC Leader, with all the money the country has been earning, the Government is still borrowing hefty sums, which is expanding the country’s external debt.
“It is a shame, you got so much Natural Resources funds and you now going and borrow and borrow at all manner of rates to the extent of doing capital works for their friends and family again. Brothers and sisters that is not that we had indicated that’s what we will do when the oil monies come, we had done a people0oriented developmental project. We had indicated that as soon as we get that money, all the student debt at UG will be cancelled, and have free education from nursery to university,” Ramjattan recalled.
The Opposition intends to raise many of the issues during the Budget debates, which opens this morning.
