With the Opposition pressing for information on the investigations into the deadly crash of a GDF helicopter back in December, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo today said information on the probe should be made known by next month.
Five Guyana Defence Force servicemen lost their lives in the helicopter crash near the village of Arau. Two other servicemen survived.
The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority is leading the investigations into the deadly crash.
At a press conference today, the Vice President said the helicopter’s “black box”, which is a voice and data recorder, was sent to the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in Washington for analysis.
“The black box was sent up at the end of December to the US, and they have scheduled a read out of the black box and they have invited our representatives to be there of the scheduled readout of the Blackbox and at that time we will find out what took place in the helicopter, hopefully from the recording, of the Blackbox” the Vice President stated.
Earlier today, Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton pressed for information on the incident to be made known, as the nation still mourns the death of the servicemen.
“It has been over two months since the crash of the GDF helicopter that tragically took the lives of five Guyanese heroes. On behalf of all Guyanese, we call on the government for an update on the investigation of this incident,” Mr. Norton stated.
The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority has been speaking with survivors of the crash and other military officials as part of the probe.
The Guyana Defence Force had announced that it would have been conducting its own investigations into the crash. A Board of Inquiry was established to probe the accident, but the GDF has been tightlipped on the probe. It has also not released any of the statements provided by the two survivors.
