AFC wants 2022 Population and Housing Census released before end of November

The Alliance for Change sees the non release of the report on the 2022 Population and Housing Census as unacceptable, and the party wants the report released soon.

AFC Leader Nigel Hughes expressed his disappointed on Friday over the situation.

“It is completely unacceptable, completely unacceptable that we are now almost to the end of November and we still have not gotten any definitive word on the date for the release of the census,” Hughes said.

He said the delay in the release of the census results would only lead to “unnecessary speculation and anxiety” in relation to the population size, and other details about the population, including the employment rate.

The AFC Leader wants the census results to be released no later than November 30.

“We would like to issue a very strong call that there be an immediate commitment that the census be released before the 30th November, 2024. I think anything other than that is going to lead to unnecessary speculation,” he said.

In mid-October, the Bureau of Statistics said a preliminary report on the 2022 Population and Housing Census would be released soon.

It said the delay in the publication of the 2022 Census results is strictly as a result of its unwavering commitment to professional diligence in the face of considerable challenges encountered during this census round.

It said like Guyana, other censuses across the Caribbean region have been significantly delayed, with countries such as Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, Dominica, and St. Lucia experiencing protracted census activities extending up to and beyond two (2) years.

The Bureau had also used the opportunity to dispel claims that the 2022 Population and Housing Census shows that Guyana’s population declined from 746,955 in the 2012 census due to migration.

It assured then that the preliminary report of the census will provide an evidence-based exposition of Guyana’s population.
