Assistant Commissioner of Police, Calvin Brutus, who is facing more than 200 criminal charges in the Court on allegations of money laundering and other financial crimes, has filed a $400 million lawsuit against Attorney General Anil Nandlall, Head of the Special Organised Crime Unit, Asst. Commissioner Fizal Karimbaksh and a number of other Police Officers.
He is accusing the named respondents in his Court action of malfeasance in public office.
In a statement this afternoon through his Attorneys, Mr. Brutus is also calling for an independent criminal investigation to be conducted into the actions of the named defendants in his Court action. Additionally, he is asking that a Presidential Commission of Inquiry be conducted into the conduct of those named in his Court action.
Brutus has also expressed his willingness to submit himself to a polygraph test on the claims he makes in his Court action, and has stated that he is prepared to appear before any Commission of Inquiry.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police has accused many in the top brass of the Police Force of conspiring with each other and other persons against him, to launch the investigation that has thrown him before the Courts to face more than 200 criminal charges.
He has often declared his innocence. On Monday, during his most recent Court appearance, one of his Attorneys said Mr. Brutus intends to fight each of the more than 200 charges that have been filed against him.
Those charges were filed by the Special Organised Crime Unit following an investigation that went on for more than two months. The investigation was initially triggered by concerns over large deposits into Brutus’ credit union accounts, but later widened after information was provided by the Financial Intelligence Unit about his bank accounts and the accounts in the names of his wife, his toddler son and three companies owned by them. Most of those accounts have since been frozen by the High Court.
In Court documents, SOCU has said the financial crimes probe against Mr. Brutus was related to more than $800 million.
Mr Brutus is being represented by Attorneys Earl Daniels, Dominic Bess, Yuborn Allicock, Eusi Anderson, Renea Marcus and Casside Nurse.
