More than two thousand households in the South and North Ruimveldt communities and nearby areas are still without electricity after several recently planted GPL concrete poles fell to the road last evening and this morning.
The situation created a domino effect with one pole initially falling onto the roadway, and bringing down the others with it. The power company said the situation worsened this morning as other poles collapsed.
The power company’s Head of Executive Management, Kesh Nandlall, told reporters that an inspection of the area revealed that ongoing road expansion and drainage works had compromised the foundation of GPL’s network infrastructure, resulting in the collapse and disruption of service to approximately 2,000 households in that community and surrounding areas.

Nandlall said the power company dispatched emergency teams to the area since last evening in an effort to remedy the situation, but the teams are still working.
The company is seeking to replant the fallen poles, restring conductors and replace affected network components, so that affected areas could be repowered.
While expressing its regrets to affected residents, the Power company has launched a full investigation into the situation. Officials from the Ministry of Public Works and the Housing Ministry also visited the area to conduct investigations of their own.
