US Ambassador does not anticipate any large scale deportation of undocumented Guyanese nationals

United States Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot today said she does not anticipate a large-scale deportation of illegal Guyanese from the United States. However, she told reporters that regular routine deportations are expected to continue

The new U.S government has overhauled its immigration policy and has embarked on a large-scale deportation of undocumented and illegal immigrants.

There are reports that a large number of Guyanese nationals who have been living illegally in the United States could see themselves being sent back home.

Speaking to reporters today on the sidelines of the Police Officers’ Conference, the US Ambassador said Guyana is not expected to see large scale deportations.

“You won’t be seeing something you have seen like in Colombia or some of the other countries—a large group, that is not something that will be happening for Guyana, it will just be a routine process that has been going on for decades,” the Ambassador noted.

Last week, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said the country has not been provided with any list of the final number of Guyanese to be deported from the United States for illegally residing in that country.

As part of its strategy to clamp down on illegal migration, the US through its Immigration and Border Control agencies has been sweeping through a number of communities across the US in search of undocumented immigrants.

For undocumented Guyanese nationals, the Ambassador said there is no specific targeting of any select group/

“Actually, I have heard nothing at this point about that from the new administration in Washington, we have always had routine deportations of citizens from all over the Caribbean and the world and that is not something new,” the Ambassador noted.

The US has been in talks with a number of countries, including in Latin America and the Caribbean to receive other undocumented immigrants from third-party countries.  The ambassador said while some discussions have been held with Guyana, there is no agreement in place on that specific issue.
