Hughes confirms meeting with Mohameds over “legal issues”

Attorney-at-law and Alliance for Change Leader, Nigel Hughes, this morning confirmed that he met with sanctioned Guyanese businessmen Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed at his law office. He said fellow Attorney and AFC General Secretary, Raphael Trotman also attended the meeting.

According to a brief statement on his Facebook page, Mr. Hughes said the meeting was requested by the Mohameds to address legal issues.

He said “the discussion included addressing legal obstacles which the team was encountering in its philanthropic work”, adding that Trotman attended the meeting to provide political and professional advice to him (Hughes).

The Attorney stated that his law office is seeking its own independent advice on whether legal services can be provided to the Mohameds.

The Mohameds were sanctioned together by the US Government along with Government Permanent Secretary Mae Thomas.

The Mohameds have repeatedly denied the accusations by the US that they were involved in money laundering, bribe payments, under gold declaration and tax evasion.

They have been lamenting the impact of the sanctions on their businesses locally and the Guyana Government not renewing their various business licenses.

The father, Nazar Mohamed, has vowed to challenge the Government’s actions in Court and also intends to challenge a recent demand letter from the Guyana Revenue Authority claiming over $900 million in additional taxes for vehicles imported four years ago.
