US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, on Thursday reaffirmed her country’s longstanding support of Guyana against Venezuela’s claims of Guyana’s Essequibo region and the neighbouring country’s continuing aggression.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the launch of a Greater Guyana Initiative project, the Ambassador said the US is also extremely concerned about Venezuela’s latest acts of aggression, inlcluding the recent incursion by a Venezuelan Coast Guard vessel in Guyana’s waters.
“We support Guyana 100% against this aggression that’s unacceptable and we won’t allow Venezuela to to threaten Guyana’s territory and sovereignty, and so we for standing with many other international partners, but I would point out that we were the first to speak out and we will always stand shoulder to shoulder with Guyana in supporting you and defending you”, Ambassador Theriot assured.

The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has also made clear the US Government’s support of Guyana and has slammed Venezuela over its ongoing aggression.
Two Saturdays ago, Guyana was forced to alert the international community to the incursion by a Venezuelan Coast Guard vessel in Guyana’s waters near to the oil ships.
The incident has received widespread condemnation. Guyana has also moved to the International Court seeking to block a planned election by Venezuela for a Governor of Guyana’s Essequibo region.
