President Irfaan Ali on Sunday said there is no targeting of sanctioned businessmen, Arruddin Mohamed and his father Nazar Mohamed by his Government, despite the family’s claims.
At a public meeting at Canal Number 2 on Sunday morning, President Ali said the GRA’s actions against the family are about preserving the rule of law.
The GRA has made attempts to seize a number of luxury vehicles imported by the family four years ago. The revenue collection body is claiming additional taxes to the tune of more than $900 million for the imported vehicles. The Mohameds have said all taxes were paid at time of import and permission was granted for the vehicles to be cleared. They have said they are being targeted by the Government over Azruddin Mohamed’s political ambitions. But President Ali has insisted that it has nothing to with the Government.
“The GRA made it very clear that there is something called post audit, and they made it clear that our international partners, international tax agency were working with them and they have a duty and responsibility when information comes before them to act in the interest of the rule of law, to act in the interest of the country,” the President noted.
The President said the PPP does not have a history of denying citizens their rights and pointed out that the Mohamed’s are within their rights to challenge GRA’s actions in the Court.
“We don’t deny anyone their rights, you can go to court and challenge it, how that is victimization by the government? But it suits a particular narrative, it suits a narrative. Everybody can say what they want about the PPP but from the time the PPP defend itself, when the General Secretary goes out there on Thursday and defend our record, they have a problem with it,” the President said.
The Mohameds have challenged the actions of the GRA and the matter is expected to be heard this week.
During his Sunday public meeting, President Ali said told party supporters that the PPP is no longer prepared to sit and watch the party’s image being tarnished by individuals and groups. He has vowed that the PPP will defend itself whenever and wherever it feels attacked and its track record is questioned.
The Mohameds were sanctioned in 2024 by the US over allegations of under-declaration of gold, money laundering and tax evasion in Guyana. They have denied the claims.
