One day after the Government announced its plan to secure the services of a Canadian Homicide Expert to assist with the investigations into the death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge, the Opposition is registering its objection.
Accusing the Irfaan Ali Government and the Guyana Police Force of attempting to cover up the probe into the girl’s death, Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey Norton said the Opposition cannot support a one man show, in which a single individual is brought in to investigate the incident.
“While we cast no aspirations on the investigator, President Irfaan Ali and the Guyana Police Force cannot be trusted to choose an investigator and determine the terms of reference. We in the Opposition stand by our previously stated position that a reputable international organisation must be invited to undertake the investigation into the death of Adrianna Younge. Nothing less is acceptable,” Norton said.
Retired Member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Leonard McCoshen has been identified as the person that the Government intends to hire to assist with the probe. He has more than 30 years of experience as an investigator. However, the Opposition Leader is adamant that a reputable international organization must conduct the investigation into the child’s death.
The Opposition Leader noted that the Police made glaring errors during the initial stages of the investigations into the girl’s disappearance and that has led to the erosion of even more trust in any probe to be conducted by the Police.
“From the inception of this issue, the police sought to mislead the public. Why would you want to mislead the public if you had a genuine interest in getting to the bottom of this issue. But instead what you did was to send out false information, stating that the child had left the hotel in a raum. Correcting it is not enough. The fact is, you misled the nation. Why did you mislead the nation? Because you have something to cover up,” Norton said.
Norton said while the autopsy found that Adriana died by drowning, the manner of death must be investigated. He reminded the press that once Adriana was reported missing on April 23, her family searched the pool thoroughly but she was nowhere to be seen.
“I do not know how they can rule out foul play where there was no proper investigation. The pathologists might have said that the person would have drowned. But like Dr Todd said, telling you the person would have drowned does not tell you the manner of death,” the Opposition Leader said.
He insists that a thorough investigation must be done by a reputable international body.
