Popular local comedienne and political activist Odessa Primus returned to Guyana from the US on Friday night hours after she traveled there and her US visa was cancelled with application withdrawn.
A U.S. visa cancellation, combined with an application withdrawn refers to the applicant being given the option of withdrawing their entry request to the United States instead of allowing the revocation of the visa upon denial of entry.
Primus, who traveled to the US as recent as a month ago, returned to the country last evening on a Jet Blue flight and was met by a local immigration officer at the aircraft for processing.
It is suspected that her visa cancellation may be linked to her ties with Azruddin Mohamed, who was sanctioned by the United States last year along with his father, their companies and Government Permanent Secretary, Mae Thomas.
Mohamed has been contemplating a run for political office and Primus has been seen at his side during some of his outings and has made known her support of him.
Contacted this morning by News Source, Ms. Primus said upon her arrival in New York at the JFK Airport, she was told that she was being denied entry and the option was given to her to allow the cancellation of her visa, with her application to enter being withdrawn.
She took the option and officially denied entry with the words “CANCELLED -NYC APPLICATION WITHDRAWN” being stamped on her US visa in her passport.
Primus said she was questioned by the US agents about the Mohameds, about a number of Government officials and other persons, including political activists.
“I asked them why I was being denied and they said the US reserves the right to deny any person entry into the US. They also said I can visit the local embassy in the company of my Attorney to inquire more about the denial of entry and the cancellation and possibly file a new application for a US visa”, Primus said.
She said she intends to do just that and has already started consultations with her Attorney.

The 41-year-old said she also intends to take legal action against the Chief Immigration Officer and the Immigration Department over the “illegal” release of an image of her cancelled US Visa. The image was published on the social media pages of the “Guyanese Critic” and “Guyana Daily News” moments after Primus left the Cheddi Jagan Airport.
She said the passport was not in her possession and remains in the possession of the Immigration Department.
According to Primus, when she disembarked the flight, the package from the US authorities with her passport was handed over directly to a local immigration officer. She said she was taken to a room with three immigration officers who questioned the reason behind the entry denial and visa cancellation before she was allowed to leave the airport with them keeping her passport.
“They were in possession of my passport and remain in possession of it. So they had to be the ones to leak that image and they will have to answer in the Courts for that”, she stated.
Primus said she is not daunted from her political activism and said she was not surprised by the move since Government officials have been quietly pushing for action to be taken against her over her political activism and public support of the Mohameds.
