Public Servants to be paid 2025 salary increase before Elections -VP promises

Six months after the Government signed an agreement with the Guyana Public Service Union for an 8% salary increase for this year, Vice President Jagdeo has announced that the increase will be paid before the upcoming national elections in September.

In May, the GPSU expressed its disappointment over the non-payment of the 8% increase from the start of the year in keeping with the collective labour agreement that was signed with the Government.

Under the agreement, the increase for this year should have taken effect from the 1st January 2025.

“It would be before, it has to be before, I hope Ashni Singh (Minister of Finance) pays it before, it does not make sense you paying the public servants after the elections, I think it will be paid before,” Mr. Jagdeo said.

The Vice President did not explain the delay in the payment of the increase to the public servants, but he assured that the increase will be paid out before September 1.

In addition, the Vice President also announced that persons who receive Government public assistance will be given their books, following some issues at the Ministry of Human Services that have now been rectified.

He said other social grant payments by the government have already kicked into effect.

“I hope that every get their books for the public assistance because a number of people have been raising this issue with me and those who are applying for the one- off grant for the NIS, we now have a system in which you can apply, I don’t know yet who are applying for those but it is targeting those who have more than 500 contributions but less than 750, they can now apply and get a substantial grant there too,” the Vice President said.

Several persons have already applied for those NIS payments.
