Moments after Presidential Candidate for the We Invest in Nationhood party was released from Police custody over an accusation of obstructing the course of justice, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo rubbished claims by the Presidential Candidate, Azruddin Mohamed, that he is being targeted and persecuted by the state.
At a press conference today, Mr. Jagdeo defended the Police and its decision to send a party officers with high-powered weapons to the WIN campaign headquarters late last night in search of the Presidential Candidate.
Jagdeo said the Police Force’s job is to investigate criminal acts, and it had a right to follow up on a report it received.
He said the Police presence at the campaign office for the WIN party had nothing to do with politics, but solely regarding the incident.
“The police are obligated by law, and if somebody does that you are engaged in perverting the course of justice to question the person, so they are saying because he is Mohamed the Police can’t question him? They are looking for sympathy again, they really think because he is a Presidential candidate, not because he was engaging over covering up the brutal beating of this woman who was seeking payment for attending his activity, by one of his candidates who is still on his list, “ Jagdeo said.
Jagdeo maintained that Mohamed is not a threat to the PPP in the upcoming elections, and noted that if the Police did not take any action in the matter, then it would seem that the laws were not being applied equally.

“And the police, if they didn’t go, then everybody would say here that he is bring treated differently, that he could do this and does not get into trouble but if an ordinary person do this, then they will be in trouble.Tthis is a criminal act, and he is directly linked to it,” the Vice President said.
Mr. Jagdeo said the story the young woman relayed is a horrifying one, and he believes the party distancing itself from its activist is just a show.
“This is a criminal act, so we just discovered after he lied once to say he is a Presidential Candidate and he is being discriminated against, but the girl who was brutally beaten gave a statement to the Police Force saying that he took ‘doggy’ and the girl to his home after the incident and then kept her there basically against her will and when she tried to leave, they threatened her,” Jagdeo noted.
Mr. Mohamed has denied the allegations and was allowed to leave the Police station without any charges or bail being required.
