President warns Leguan residents not to gamble with their vote in upcoming elections

In an appeal to residents of Leguan, encouraging them not to gamble with their future at the upcoming elections, President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday promised that the next People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government would improve the healthcare services on the island, starting with the reconstruction of the Leguan Hospital.

“The next five years must deliver to you a health system where our pregnant mothers don’t have to go anywhere else to give birth. That is why, we are going to not only rehabilitate but rebuild your hospital to a standard and class that is befitting anything you see on the coast,” he said.

He said the healthcare system will be expanded to respond to the island’s growing population.

In the Agriculture Sector, President Ali admitted that all is not well in some areas. He said the Administration is cognizant that drainage and irrigation issues on the island of Leguan are hampering the Agriculture Sector, especially the rice industry.

To address those issues, Mr. Ali said the PPP/C would construct a canal through the island as was proposed, in the past.

“Today, the farmers have written us, and they said this is a viable solution. And what are we going to do? We are going to build that irrigation canal and channel so that you can get the water, and you can plant your rice and you would not be dependent on the rainfall alone,” the President said.

He also spoke of the party’s plans to transport farmers’ paddy and rice free of cost, introduce crop insurance and establish a price stabilization fund among other initiatives.

But he told supporters that those plans could only be realized if his party secures an overwhelming victory at the September 1 Elections.

Noting that the other parties in the election race are working to reduce the PPP/C to a minority Government, President Ali warned of the dangers associated with a minority government. He said there is much work to be done, and the PPP/C must be given a chance to continue the work it has started.

“Is there still work to be done? Obviously, there is a lot more work to be done on this island. But who can you trust to get that work done? Who do you believe will get that work done? Who will you invest in to get that work done? There is only one answer, that is, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic! And we shall not rest until the work is done on this island, when you have the quality of life and the access to the quality of life like any other Guyanese anywhere else in this country,” President Ali said.

Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, in his address to the residents, said Guyana is at a very critical juncture in its development, and it is therefore important for the country to be led by a leader who has demonstrated his prudently manage the country.

Mr. Nandlall said President Ali has set Guyana on a transformative path with developments taking place in key sectors.
