A second terminal building is to be constructed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, and United Kingdom company, BHM group, will be doing the construction.
Speaking during the sod-turning ceremony for the new airport facility today, President Irfaan Ali said the current airport cannot handle the incoming and outgoing traffic, and with air travel set to further expand, a decision was taken to add a new terminal.
The new terminal is also expected to provide airlines with their own space.
“Today is about catering for the future, and can a single terminal hold the weight of Guyana’s future? No my friends, that is why we build, we cannot build for today we cannot only design for this year, we must build with tomorrow in mind and tomorrow tells that we will need one but two or multiple terminals,” the President noted.
The President said the new building will be an experience that will sell Guyana positively.
He said although the project was on the cards for a while, negotiation went on for longer than anticipated.

The last CJIA expansion project was hampered by several delays and took several years, with some work still ongoing more than a decade later.
“Guyana is not just turning the sod for a new airport terminal, we are turning the sod of a new vision of Guyana and I am confident that Guyana is ready for that future. I want you to imagine what this airport is going to look like five years from now, because we have to have a terminal that can process thousands of people within 72 hours, because we are going to build a world-class arena to host international events here so that it could support the investors who are building the hotels,” the President announced.
Works Minister, Juan Edghill said the new terminal will boast modern amenities including business lounges.
“The world is coming to Guyana and Guyana is preparing for the world, the business launches for business travel will be in terminal two, there will be more concession areas, we are talking about more space, more facilities, and speedier access for people arriving in country, the Mr. Edghill said.
BHM will be partnering with the Manchester Airport Group to design and construct the new 150,000 square-foot terminal.
UK High Commissioner to Guyana, Jane Miller, described the company as of the best companies to do the job and she is confident that Guyana will be proud of the finished product.
