Popular tour guide found burnt to death in car; Cows found dead with gunshot wounds nearby in South Rupununi

Almost a week since the partially burnt body of well known Rupununi tour guide, Leon Baird, was found in a car along the eastern bank of the Rupununi River in South Rupununi, his villagers and many others who knew him are not pleased with the pace of the Police investigations. A number of persons, who believe that the man was murdered, are calling on the Police to conduct a more thorough investigation.

The Police only released an official statement today on the discovery of the man’s charred remains, five days after the discovery.

In a statement this afternoon, the Police said a post-mortem examination was conducted on the man’s remains on Tuesday by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh.

The cause of death was given as burns, and the post mortem also indicated that the victim was alive prior to the fire. The body has since been handed over to relatives for burial. The Police said DNA samples were also obtained as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Police statement indicated that during the investigations in the area, investigators also discovered the remains of two cows that had been shot to death.

There have been no arrests in the case, and the Police said it is working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
