Guyana and Belize ink agreement to strengthen ties in forestry sector

Guyana and Belize have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration and cooperation in the Forestry Sector.

The agreement, which was signed on Friday, establishes a framework for technical cooperation, information sharing and joint initiatives focused on sustainable forest management, biodiversity protection, and climate change resilience and adaptation.

Under the agreement, Belize and Guyana intend to collaborate in a number of areas, including the transfer of technology and technical expertise, development of carbon market opportunities, the enhancement of Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems, the strengthening of monitoring, surveillance and disaster preparedness systems and expanded research and training initiatives.

It also allows for the execution of joint forest conservation projects.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd signed the MoU together with Belize’s Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management Orlando Habet.

Minister Todd said the MoU is an important step in strengthening bilateral relations between Guyana and Belize and augurs well for regional integration and environmental cooperation.

“This partnership here, cooperation between Guyana and Belize covers many areas – research, technical training – I think it is important for us to see that we have done a lot of work, that we are aligned as small states, and that the leadership that has been provided by the two Heads,” Minister Todd said.

He said the agreement is broad based covering important areas like the environment.  The Foreign Affairs Minister said though the agreement spans five years, it provides for automatic extension.

Minister Habet said the MoU builds on existing partnerships.

“This Memorandum of Understanding is more than a document, it is a reflection of a journey, one that connects people, institutions and countries. It represents collaboration in forest conservation, biodiversity protection, climate resilience, MRVs systems and carbon market opportunities – areas that are critical, not only to Belize and Guyana but to the global climate agenda. But more importantly, it represents what is possible,” Minister Habet said.

He said today, Belize and Guyana stand not just as neighbours in CARICOM but as partners in safeguarding their forests, strengthening their resilience and shaping a more sustainable future.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, said the signing of the MoU marks a further step in the development of Guyana-Belize relations, building on recent high-level engagements between the two countries during the state visit to Belize in January 2026 by President Ali, where he held fruitful discussions with Prime Minister of Belize, John Briceno.
