Accused in murder of Sir Mars to face full trial after changing guilty plea

Weeks after entering a guilty plea in the murder of school principal, Kirwyn Mars, the High Court today ordered that the accused, Brian Richards face a full trial.

Back in May, Richards pleaded guilty to the murder charge and arrived at Court this morning to face sentencing. However, he maintained his innocence and told the Court that he did not understand the guilty plea that he had offered.

Justice Joy Persaud-Singh, upon hearing the man’s explanation, sought further clarification. The accused clarified that at no point was he forced to plead guilty, but said he did not fully understand the consequences of that guilty plea, and would now like to stand trial.

The presiding Judge then ordered that the accused face a full trial.

In June 2025, Richard was committed to stand trial for the May 2023 murder of Sir Mars after Magistrate Sunil Scarce found that there was sufficient evidence against him,

Mars was brutally stabbed to death in his car then ran over by the same car when he attempted to run.

A pathologist ruled that Mars died as a result of crushing injuries to the chest, which were compounded by other wounds.  He was stabbed eight times.

Stab wounds were found to the left side of his chest, his right shoulder, upper left collarbone, left hand and right elbow.

Richards was arrested after police investigators identified him from various surveillance video recordings leaving a bar in the presence of the victim, just hours before the brutal attack than ended in murder.
