A cameraman and a driver attached to the Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed, remain in Police custody this morning after being arrested late yesterday afternoon on the West Coast of Demerara on suspicion of operating a drone in the Leonora area, where the President has his private home.

The Opposition Leader denied that there was any drone being operated in the area and reminded that the area is a restricted zone, which makes it impossible for drones to operate there.

Mr. Mohamed and two of his Members of Parliament, who were reportedly in company with the other two men, were also held for questioning by the Police, but were released from custody late last night.

In a video message last evening, Mr. Mohamed said he and his team were in the area observing sea defence works, and what he suspects to be major corrupt activities in those works.

The Police claim that the two vehicles with the men were intercepted while leaving the Leonora area after being observed by Presidential guards at the President’s private residence.

Drone equipment and camera equipment were reportedly found in one of the vehicles, prompting a statement from the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority last night.

That statement indicated that several reported unregistered drones were found in the vehicle.

The GCAA reminded that the unauthorized operation of drones, including unmanned aircraft within restricted or prohibited airspace, is illegal and may constitute a criminal offence under the Civil Aviation Act 2018 and applicable aviation regulations.

During a live broadcast in the compound of the Leonora Police Station, the Opposition Leader was seen telling a Police Officer that no drone was operating in the area.

He also said that he is unaware of any law that prohibits him or anyone else from being in a vehicle in a community where the President has his private residence.
