39-year-old vagrant, Roy Morgan, has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after pleading guilty simple larceny related to the theft of copper cables from the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.

Morgan was arrested on Wednesday as Police probed the theft of the cables which were used to power the LED lights on the bridge. He was nabbed in the vicinity of the bridge with tools suspected to have been used for the cutting of the cables. He also reportedly led investigators to a location, where pieces of the stolen cables were found.

Appearing at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court this morning, the man entered a guilty plea when the charge was read to him and was immediately sentenced to 12 months in jail.

Also appearing in Court today was 51-year-old, Tuschen businessman, Mustaf Pashaw, who was charged with receiving stolen articles after several pieces of the stolen cables were allegedly found at one of his business places.

In Court today, Pashaw was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge. However, he was granted bail int he sum of $300,000 and will make his next Court appearance on the 2nd October, 2026.
