The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) has started enforcement action against the unauthorised placement and storage of shipping containers on a residential property at Herstelling on the East Bank Demerara.

In a release this morning, the CH&PA said its Enforcement Officers visited the property over the weekend and observed more than 45 shipping containers being stored on the lot.

According to the Authority, the activity is unauthorised and contravenes the approved use of the property, which is designated for single-family residential purposes.

The CH&PA also raised safety concerns over the manner in which the containers have been stacked on the property, noting the potential risk to persons living or operating in the surrounding area.

A Notice of Contravention directing that all storage activities cease immediately was sent to the property owner, who has also been instructed to remove the shipping containers within the week.

The CH&PA has reminded property owners and occupiers that any development or change in land use must comply with the relevant planning requirements and receive the necessary approvals.

The Authority said it will continue to monitor housing schemes and take enforcement action against unauthorised developments and activities that breach planning regulations or the approved use of residential lands.

The enforcement drive, according to the CH&PA, forms part of its commitment to protecting the integrity of residential communities and promoting orderly and sustainable development.
