Moments after being released on bail this afternoon, Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, expressed concern for his safety.
Speaking to reporters at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Mr. Mohamed said the full extent of what happened should be released from nearby CCTV cameras, saying that there was a clear intention to kill him.
Mr. Mohamed said he and his two staff members came under fire moments after he took out his phone and started recording in the vicinity of Narine’s home.
“Prem Narine came out and I put my hands in the air and asked him what was the matter, and about 4-5 shots were aimed in my direction, the people of this country aint understand what happened as yet, this is what happened and I am concerned for my safety, because the manner in which Prem jumped out of that vehicle, it was to kill,” Mr. Mohamed said.
The Opposition Leader questioned why Mr. Narine has not been charged.
He said the entire incident appeared to have been a “set up”, since he received a call from persons claiming that state resources were being abused at Mr. Narine’s house, and that was the reason he left his home to investigate.
He said it was not unusual for him to respond to such calls but he said the latest incident will hamper his work at Opposition Leader.
“This will hamper my work significantly because I always like to ground with the people, going in to the communities to reach with my fellow brothers and sisters and that is what they don’t wan, they don’t want that, so this was to kill me,” Mr. Mohamed declared.
The Opposition Leader, his driver Eugene Thorne, and videographer Mario Mohamed were today released on $750,000 bail each.
