The Guyana Police Force on Monday night announced that it has placed a 20-year-old Police Constable under close arrest as it probes the leak of surveillance video recordings from the Government’s Safe Country video surveillance programme at its Command Centre.
The video recordings at the centre of the probe relate to the shooting incident that took place in Kitty last week involving the Head of the Special Branch, Senior Superintendent Prem Narine and Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed.
At a press conference on Monday, the Opposition Leader released full surveillance video recordings of the incident which showed his car being approached at a traffic light by a Police vehicle and the Special Branch head holding a gun and firing a number of gunshots in the direction of the Opposition Leader’s car before arresting him and two of his workers.

In response to the Opposition Leader’s release of the video recording, the Guyana Police Force issued two statements within minutes of each other announcing the arrest of a Police Constable on suspicion of leaking the video.
The Police claim that the Constable was allegedly paid an $800,000 bribe for the video recording, which it says, he allegedly downloaded from its Command Centre and allegedly provided to the Opposition Leader. The Police allege that the Constable went on a weekend shopping spree and also provided money to his mother. The police statement said its investigators are trying to recover the money.
While the initial press statement stated that the matter was under probe after the Police received information regarding the allegations, the second press statement issued minutes later stated that the Police Constable had allegedly admitted to the alleged crime.
In both statements, however, the Police said its investigation into the alleged downloading of the surveillance footage at its Command Centre for surveillance is based on information received.
