King Charles lll arrives for busy two-day Guyana visit

Britain’s King Charles III arrived in Guyana this afternoon from The Bahamas for a hectic two-day visit as part of his three nation autumn tour, which will end in the coming week in Antigua and Barbuda.

The King’s visit to Guyana is his first since ascending to the British throne. He last visited Guyana in 2000 while he was still a Prince. This afternoon he was met and welcomed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport by President Irfaan Ali and a Government team that included the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hugh Todd and the Senior Minister responsible for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh.

The British High Commissioner to Guyana, Joseph Fisher also formed part of the welcoming team.

After briefly meeting with the welcoming party, King Charles took the salute and was invited to Inspect the Guard of Honor, which was made up of various units from the Guyana Defence Force.

The King and his team left for Georgetown, where he will meet later this evening with President Irfaan Ali and attend a State reception being held in his honour.

The British High Commissioner in a video statement said the King’s visit to Guyana will reinforce the strong partnership between the two countries.

“His Majesty The King’s visit this week will be a special moment to celebrate the modern and dynamic partnership between the UK and Guyana, as our countries mark 60 years of bilateral relations. The King’s visit, at the invitation of His Excellency President Ali, will highlight the many connections between our peoples, and the shared interests that bring our countries together. I am delighted that His Majesty will have the opportunity over the course of the visit to meet people from across Guyanese society, including at a public engagement at the Kingston Seawall”, Fisher said.

The British High Commission in a statement explained that throughout the visit, The King will meet young people, business leaders, Indigenous community representatives, and innovators from across Guyanese society, including at the Global Biodiversity Alliance conference which is coinciding with his visit.

Members of the public will have the opportunity to meet the King on Friday afternoon at the Kingston Seawall bandstand.

On Friday, King Charles will commemorate the shared loss and sacrifice of Guyanese, British and Commonwealth forces at the Georgetown Memorial in Rabbit Walk.

He will also meet elected leaders from The National Toshaos Council to hear about their work representing the Indigenous Peoples of Guyana.

During the visit, The King will also learn more about Guyana’s leading role in global efforts to conserve forests, protect biodiversity and tackle climate change.

And with UK-Guyana trade now reaching £2.2 billion annually, the King will attend a business reception to hear how UK companies are supporting Guyana’s sustainable development.

Building on this growing trade relationship, UK Export Finance has up to £3 billion available to support projects in Guyana, helping to facilitate further trade and investment between our two countries, the British High Commission said.

Following his visit to Guyana, King Charles will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.
