World Trade Centre-Georgetown opening seen as major boost to Guyana’s transformation

President Irfaan Ali on Friday commissioned the World Trade Centre Georgetown, saying that the opening signifies a new high for Guyana.

During his address, the President said it was important to establishments like the World Trade Centre to signify Guyana’s positioning in the global community.

He said the Government is trying to position country in a way that is going to be transformative, not just for Guyana but also for the region. According to President Ali, with the investments already here and the others that are coming in, the Government is confident about the outlook of the country and the major role it will be able to play globally.

“Having a building is one thing but having a building that has certain characteristics is another story, when the sophisticated investors speak to you and hear you have common service under the World Trade Centre, it sends a different signal, so we are signaling to the international community and sophisticated investors that we are ready to play in any league and that is very important,” the President said.

The President noted that the World Trade Centre and similar organizations within the network is critical for the administration’s current phase of transformation in the country.

“I look forward to the new World Trade Centre Georgetown helping to shape this new economic culture in our country, one that speaks the language of export readiness, trade facilitation and global competitiveness with the tools, networks and exposure needed to compete and win on the global stage,” the President noted.

But while hailing the private sector investment, the President said issues for small and medium-sized enterprises especially how an enabling environment can be created to help them with their competitiveness, and to meet the standards that the international markets would accept, is still being examined. He said both Government and the larger private sector organizations have a role to play.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the World Trade Centre Guyana, Komal Samaroo, said the new Centre has already hit the ground running to collaborate with international companies.

“Since the license acquisition, the WTC Georgetown, has been quite active promoting Guyana and collaborating in the area of information exchange, regulation and market access, training including training in Chinese language and exchange in trade and investment mission”, he noted.

The World Trade Centre – Georgetown is expected to play an active role in helping Guyanese businesses, especially small and medium businesses, promote their offerings internationally, build business connections, access markets, and contribute to best practices to facilitate the growth and expansion of their businesses.
